Liver transplant recipient asks for financial assistance

At the age of six months, Ma. Katrina Angeles was diagnosed with a chronic liver disease called primary sclerosing cholangitis cirrhosis.

When she turned 21 years old last year, doctors declared her ready to undergo a liver transplant, her father Luciano Angeles told the Inquirer.

It took a long time but with the help of kindhearted persons, her family was able to raise the P4.5 million needed for the operation. Katrina’s brother volunteered to be the donor.

The procedure proved to be a success and at the moment, Katrina is recovering in a hospital in Taiwan.

Only recently, however, Luciano said doctors informed them that they needed to pay P250,000 more for the operation.

“It was already too late when we were informed of the additional charge. We cannot back out anymore,” the 58-year-old farmer from Nueva Ecija said.

While appealing for help from readers, Luciano said he was happy for his daughter whose new lease on life could be considered the best gift his family received last Christmas.

“I’ve seen her pictures after the operation; she looks very beautiful,” he said.
