Did you know: Melchora Aquino

Today (Monday) is the 202nd birth anniversary of Melchora Aquino, the “Mother of the Philippine Revolution.” Also known as Tandang Sora, she supported Katipuneros when the revolution broke out in 1896 by providing them with food and nursing those wounded in battle. She was later arrested, jailed and deported to Guam, where she lived in exile for six years. She returned to the Philippines in 1903 after being repatriated. Aquino died on March 2, 1919, at the age of 107. Her remains are interred at the Mausoleum of the Veterans of the Philippine Revolution at the Manila North Cemetery.—Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
