5.1 quake hits off Surigao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines—A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck off Surigao del Norte at 5:56 p.m. Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake that hit 62 kilometers northeast of Burgos town at a shallow depth of 21 kilometers.

Phivolcs initially put its magnitude at 4.3.

The temblor was felt at Intensity III in Burgos and Intensity II in the town of Del Carmen, also in Surigao Del Norte.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide casuing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
