MANILA, Philippines—One holiday down, more to go.
Filipinos celebrated the new year’s first holiday on Wednesday, but there are 19 more reasons to sit back and relax and take a break from all the hustle and bustle.
In its official website, the Philippine government listed 18 holidays—regular and special nonworking–for 2014 that began with New Year’s Day on January 1.
Two other islamic events– Eid’l Fitr and Eidul Adha–will be observed and declared nonworking days, but the government has yet to determine the actual dates by which they will be observed.
The next holiday to be celebrated is another new year celebration, the Chinese New Year, on January 31, which will usher in the Year of the Wooden Horse, according to their zodiac.
February 25 has also been declared a holiday to enable the people to celebrate the Edsa people power revolution. There will be no classes on that day.
December has the most number of holidays in a month with five. In addition to Christmas day on December 25 and Jose Rizal day on December 30, Malacañang has also declared December 24, 26, and 31 as special nonworking days.
From April 17 until 19, Filipino Catholics will practice penance for the season of Lent that includes Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday.
