Marikina mayor’s wife dies of lymphoma

MANILA, Philippines — The wife of Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman died on New Year’s day in a Pasig hospital, according to a city official.

Paul Sison, the city’s public information officer, said Amalia Gonzaga de Guzman passed away at 4:10 p.m. in The Medical City.

Sison said she was 46 years old.

De Guzman, who had been in and out of the hospital recently, succumbed to lymphoma, Sison said. Lymphoma is a type of cancer characterized by an uncontrolled growth in lymphocytes, the body’s immune system cells.

Her remains lie in state at the Loyola Memorial Chapels and Crematorium in Marikina.

Sison said the details of the burial would be announced later on Thursday.
