Today, September 9, is the 133rd birth anniversary of Sergio Osmeña Sr., the country’s fourth president and second president of the Commonwealth.  A former member of the House of Representatives (where he served for many years as speaker) and a former senator, he was elected vice president in 1935.  Osmeña eventually served the remaining term of Manuel L. Quezon as president upon the latter’s death on Aug. 1, 1944.  During the Japanese Occupation, he went to the United States together with Quezon. He returned to the country with Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Oct. 20, 1944, and brought with him the exiled Commonwealth government.  He passed away on Oct. 19, 1961. Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
