Aquino leads Rizal Day rites in Tarlac

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III on Monday led the 117th anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal’s martyrdom in Tarlac City.

The President arrived in Rizal Park in Tarlac City shortly after 7 a.m. for the flag raising ceremony which, according to Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr., was approximately the time Rizal gave his life on Dec. 30, 1896 at Luneta, now Rizal Park, in Manila.

Similar flag-raising rites were also held in various cities nationwide. In Manila, Vice President Jejomar Binay led the flag raising rites along with former President, now Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.

Also in Manila, the Light and Metro Rail Transit (LRT/MRT) is offering free rides from 7 to 9 a.m., and from 5 to 7 p.m.
