New Year-related injuries rise to 244

MANILA, Philippines—The number of people injured in New Year-related cases rose from 198 Sunday to 244 as of 6 a.m. Monday, according to Health Assistant Secretary Eric Tayag.

Tayag, in his Twitter account, said 238 of the 244 cases reported were due to firecrackers, one was due to firecracker ingestion, and the remaining five were hit by stray bullet.

Of the 238 injuries, 153 were caused by the banned firecracker “piccolo,” an increase from Sunday’s 119.

For the same period last year, the department recorded only 185 injuries caused by firecrackers, one ingestion and two were hit by stray bullet.
