MANILA, Philippines—Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo said winning the trust of the people remains a big challenge for the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“I think there are two challenges in the PNP—trustworthiness between the people and the police,” Robredo said Thursday.

The remark came after President Benigno Aquino appointed Deputy Director General Nicanor Bartolome as the new national police chief.

Bartolome replaced Bacalzo, who retires Friday, six days before he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56 on September 15.
