Yolanda death toll rises anew

MANILA, Philippines—The death toll from supertyphoon Yolanda has escalated to 6,109 after the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) temporarily stopped the daily count of bodies recovered on Monday.

In the latest NDRRMC report on Sunday, the number of bodies dug up from rubble raised to 6,109 while 27,665 were injured and 1,770 were still unaccounted for.

Of the 6,109 toll, 5,755 came from the provinces of Leyte and Samar, where the strongest typhoon made its initial landfalls.

In Leyte alone, where the highest number of deaths was recorded, 5,260 died.

In Tacloban, the hardest-hit city by the destructive typhoon, the government have not yet identified 2,494 bodies.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said the number of those affected has been the same since Saturday at 3,423,593 families or 16,078,181 have been affected, leaving 4,095,280 persons displaced.

The cost of damage wrought by Yolanda also remained at P36.6 billion with P18.2 billion coming from damages in infrastructures and P18.5 billion for destroyed crops, livestock, fisheries, and irrigation facilities.
