MANILA, Philippines—Scattered fights broke out around the vicinity of a church in Manila during Saturday’s “Simbang Gabi” (dawn Mass) celebration.

The fights happened on New Panaderos Street in Sta. Ana, Manila after groups of teenagers who were supposedly hearing the dawn Mass “exchanged angry glares” according to marshals deployed in the church grounds.

Other scuffles resulted from teenagers allegedly disrespecting girls from another group of similar-aged individuals.

“Generally, the Masses are peaceful except for these scuffles usually involving teenagers,” said the marshals deployed in the church.

According to Inspector Diana Gutierrez of the nearby police station, incidents involving minors would only require the kids’ parents or barangay (village) captains to pick them up from the station.

Both mishaps began inside the church grounds during the Mass, marshals and police officers said.
