MANILA, Philippines – The security guards in Dasmariñas Village failed to give courtesy and security assistance as dictated by “protocol” to Mayor Jejomar “Jujnjun” Binay Jr. and his convoy, a Binay spokesperson said on Thursday over television.
“There is a protocol on the village that VIPs should be given courtesy and security assistance. This is a Standard Operating Procedure. Unfortunately, they failed to give this,” Joey Salgado said.
Salgado issued a statement in response to a Philippine Daily Inquirer story and video of Binay and his bodyguards in a standoff with village security after the mayor and his men attempted to exit one of the main gates of Dasmariñas Village that prohibited the entry of vehicles after 10 p.m.
Salgado said they could not understand why the security guards acted rudely and raised their voices.
He said that Binay and his camp should not have been treated as criminals and terrorists.
He said this wasn’t the first time that Binay went to the village because he regularly attended meetings and emergencies there. Salgado did not elaborate.
He admitted that the mayor’s security men were seen cocking their guns in the video but clarified it was just because six more guards arrived in the place creating more tension.
“That was the time Binay called the Philippine National Police (PNP) to ease the tension. He just exercised his police power and his police were just there to protect their chief,” he said.
He said Ram Antonio, head of the Security Agency in charge of the guards
has apologized to Binay.
He added that the security guards involved should undergo briefing and orientation.
