MANILA, Philippines—Public storm warning signals in several provinces have been lowered as tropical storm “Bebeng” (international name: Aere) continues to move away from the country, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Tuesday.
In its latest weather bulletin, Pagasa said the tropical storm was seen 120 kilometers southeast of Basco, Batanes packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 80 kph.
Bebeng is expected to move northeastward at 17 kph.
Signal number 1 remains raised over Cagayan, Apayao, Batanes, and Babuyan and Calayan group of Islands, Pagasa said.
Storm warning signals have been lowered elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Bebeng is expected to bring rains over the western section of Luzon.
“Residents in low lying areas and near mountain slopes under signal number 1 are advised to take all the necessary precautions against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone,” the state-run weather bureau warned.
Bebeng is expected to be 330 kilometers northeast of Basco, Batanes by Wednesday morning and at 130 kilometers west southwest of Okinawa, Japan by Thursday morning.
