Huey crashes in Leyte

MANILA, Philippines—A Philippine Air Force UH-1H Huey helicopter crashed in storm-ravaged Leyte province Friday afternoon, leaving its passengers and crew injured, authorities said.

Two of the Huey’s three passengers were from the Department of Social Welfare and Development, said Air Force spokesperson Col. Ernesto Miguel Okol.

It was not clear, however, if the group was on a humanitarian mission.

Okol said that the Huey went down at around 3:30 p.m. between the towns of Burauen and La Paz in Leyte.

Police Supt. Erwin Portillo of the Leyte Provincial Police said in a separate interview that the chopper had five crew members and three passengers. The chopper crashed in Barangay Bagacay in La Paz.

The passengers and crew were all brought to the Burauen District Hospital.
