MANILA, Philippines — Former Batangas Governor Antonio Leviste and 34 other inmates from the national penitentiary is set to be released today, Friday.

Bureau of Corrections Director Franklin Bucayu confirmed in a text message that the Board of Pardons and Parole approved Leviste’s application for parole.

Bucayu said that Leviste would be released because he has served the minimum term of his prison sentence.

Leviste has been convicted by the Makati regional trial court for the death of his aide Rafael Delas Alas and was meted the penalty of six years and one day to 12 years of imprisonment.

He became controversial in 2011 following reports that he could sneak in and out of the prison whenever he wanted.
