WHAT the earthquake had broken, this woman put together — a fitting example of resilience
Right after the 7.2-magnitude earthquake last Oct. 15, this 52-year-old woman was so worried that the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Sto. Niño Maharlika Chapel in barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City, was broken.
Evangeline Garcia tried to repair the religious icon using super glue, but the broken pieces just wont stick.
Getting an idea from her daughter Geneve, Evangeline, took out old newspapers, applied glue and used it to put the pieces of the icon together. It worked. Now, the icon is back in the chapel
“Ang iyahang ulo kay mao gyud to ang original, ang lawas kay gi puzzle lang unya the rest kay paper maché na (The head is still intact and I had just replaced it, but the body are glued broken pieces, the rest is paper maché),” she said.
Now, Garcia makes paper maché figurines and coin banks.
So far, Garcia made more than 20 dog and cat figurines. She sells it at P350 to P550 apiece in the Christmas Bazaar at the Mandaue City Heritage Plaza.
