MANILA, Philippines—Like other sectors, the Philippine National Police is reeling from the effects of Supertyphoon “Yolanda,” which left 6 policemen dead, 15 injured and 2 missing, and over P225 million worth of police structures in ruins, the PNP spokesperson said Sunday.

Senior Supt. Reuben Theodore Sindac said 15 dependents of PNP personnel also perished in the monster storm which affected a total of 6,271 policemen in Eastern Visayas alone.

PNP Director General Alan Purisima flew to Palo, Leyte, on Friday to supervise the distribution of cash and non-cash assistance to affected police personnel.

Purisima said 4,250 food packs were given to 3,187 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel.

Aside from the food packs—which each contained three kilos of rice, canned goods, water and clothes—the PNP also handed out T-shirts, camouflage uniforms, combat boots and blankets to the personnel.

“Construction materials will also be given to help them rebuild their homes,” Purisima said in a statement.
