Cracks in Buhisan pose danger to residents

About 25 families living in two sitios in barangay Buhisan are at risk of being buried by a landslide following the discovery of two crack lines measuring over 10 meters each near the area yesterday.
“Considering, their present situation, the extent of their horizontal displacement and the length of the crack lines, we are of the opinion that a landslide in the area is imminent,” Councilor Dave Tumulak said in his report.
Tumulak, who chairs the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CCDRRMC), inspected the area together with Harold Alcontin of Cebu City Hall’s Management Information and Computer Services office.
They were informed about the crack lines by barangay Buhisan chairman Ramil Rago, who inspected the cracks last Wednesday after a resident told him about it last Sunday. The two crack lines are located in sitio Dulhugan and each has a horizontal displacement measuring .40 meters.
The first crack is 10 meters long while the second is 12.5 meters long.
“Identified danger areas are sitios Sandayong and Puti which are occupied by 45 families. It is urgent that the families be evacuated to a safer area,” Tumulak said.
Tumulak also recommended technical assessment of experts from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).
“So far, all the earthquakes and aftershocks we’re experiencing are coming from the fault line in Bohol. We have to inspect the area,” said Robinson Giorgio of the Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) when asked if it was a new fault line. Correspondent Jose Santino S. Bunachita
