Solon seeks 3-year tuition moratorium

MANILA, Philippines —Amid the devastation wrought by Supertyphoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan), Kabataan Partylist Representative Terry Ridon calls on Congress to immediately pass a measure that seeks to impose a three-year moratorium on tuition and other fee increases on all educational institutions.

Ridon, together with other members of the Makabayan bloc in the lower house, filed House Bill 354. The measure aims to prohibit tuition and other fee hike in schools that have registered profit in the previous year.

He said now is the right time to enact a three-year tuition moratorium law to provide immediate relief to the victims of the typhoon that left at least 5,240 people dead, mostly in Eastern Visayas.

The lawmaker said the national tuition moratorium would give the people, especially the parents and students,  a much-needed respite as they rebuild their homes and their lives after the tragedy. With a report from Isa Avendaño, Inquirer Radio 990AM
