Money transfer security guard shot dead for empty cash box

MANILA, Philippines — A group of three robbers on Sunday morning barged into a Western Union branch in Parañaque City on Sunday morning, shot dead the security guard and took away a cash box that turned out to be empty.

“Na-Mali sila (They were fooled),” Senior Supt. Ariel Andrade, the Parañaque police chief, said of the robbery-holdup that happened around 8 a.m. on Sunday at the Western Union branch in Dr. A. Santos Avenue in Barangay San Isidro in Parañaque City.

In the robbers’ attempt to take cash, however, they killed the on-duty security guard identified as Felipe Montilla.

The victim sustained fatal gunshot wounds in the chest and left side of the body. He died on the spot.

Andrade, however, could not say if the security guard fought off the robbers.

The three robbers carrying short firearms fled on board a motorcycle with an unknown plate number, the police said.

Andrade said the robbers for sure were not aware that the cash box was empty and they were taking away nothing of value.

The robbers also left with the service firearm of the slain security guard.
