Defending Cesafi football champs Webmasters lose to UV in season’s first outing

The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters started their campaign in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Collegiate Football Championships on a sour note, losing to the University of the Visayas (UV), 1-0,  yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field.

UV’s Joelito Lucanas benefited from a goalmouth scramble 41 minutes in the first half for the Green Lancers’ first win of the tournament.

Despite the loss, UC coach Glenn Ramos said his team still did well considering that only four players have remained from the team that took the plum last year.

He said he is very satisfied with their performance because UV is manned by veterans with most of its players coming from secondary football powerhouse Abellana National School (ANS).

For his team to lose the by just one point,  Ramos said he is very confident of his team’s chances.

Ramos said he told hsi boys their target is to get to the semifinal round and only then would they work on getting to the finals. This was the same goal that they had last year.

In yesterday’s first match, the University of San Carlos (USC) solidified its hold at the top of the leaderboard with another win yesterday, this time beating the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) Kicking Jaguars, 1-0.

It was a heartbreaking loss  for USJ-R after an “own goal” put USC ahead of them five minutes into the match.

Karl Arcenas’ attempt turned into a goal after it glanced off the head of one of the USJ-R defenders.

USC now enjoys a six-point lead, followed by UV with three points, University of Southern Philippines Foundation  and USJ-R with a point each while defending champion UC is at the bottom rung.

In the secondary division, Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) once again showcased its resurgence in the sport which they help make popular in Cebu with an 18-0 annihilation of USPF last Saturday.

DBTC is currently leading in the standings with three points.
