THE Chinese government sent 2,600 tents and 10,000 blankets as part of their assistance to victims of supertyphoon Yolanda.
Wu Zhengping, economic and commercial counselor of the People’s Republic of China, said despite the territorial dispute between the two countries, the Chinese government is monitoring the situation in the Philippines.
“The Chinese government donated $200,000 in cash to the Philippines and yesterday the first batch of relief goods arrived,” Zhengping said.
The second batch of goods containing more tents and blankets arrived at the Mactan Cebu International Airport at 12 noon yesterday. “The tents can accommodate six to 10 people,” he said.
Over a hundred rescue, medical crew and a hospital ship are also on standby in China waiting for the national government’s go signal.
“We have Chinese companies already on the ground checking at the situation like State Grid Corp., the partner company of NGCP (National Grid Corp. of the Philippines). They are now working to restore power in Leyte and other areas hit by the typhoon,” Zhengping said.
Chinese companies in the country include those in the telecommunications, construction and power raised P7 million in donations. Reporter Aileen Garcia-Yap
