Saving lives, one toilet at a time.
This was the theme of Tuesday’s celebration of World Toilet Day which was attended by more than 100 women who pledged to take part in the 1 Million Clean Toilets Movement.
The activity held at the Manila City Hall was part of the run-up to the goal of having one million clean toilets by November next year, in time for the 2014 World Toilet Day.
“Over 90 percent of households in the Philippines don’t realize that there are germs left in the toilet that can cause diseases, some of which lead to death. Domex has initiated this movement to address the said crisis … [and] raise awareness on proper toilet sanitation to help save lives,” the company which sponsored the program said in a statement.
Under the program, which is in partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), Philippine Public Health Association, Manila City government and Pilipinas Shell, women were taught how to properly clean and sanitize their toilets. They were also given free cleaning materials.
Domex Philippines, meanwhile, encouraged everyone to take part in the movement. “For every pledge received, we will donate P5 to Unicef’s sanitation program,” it announced on its Facebook page. Maricar B. Brizuela
