MANILA, Philippines—The sudden downpour Sunday night flooded several low-lying areas in Quezon City and Pasig City, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.

As of 7:16 p.m., the Talayan Creek near Araneta and Quezon Avenues in Quezon City remained flooded with the waterway overflowing due to the torrential rain, monitoring from the MMDA Flood Control Information Office (MMDA-FCIC) showed.

While the rains ceased, water was slowly subsiding, said Rosvid Bamba of the MMDA-FCIC by phone. The area remained impassable to all types of vehicles as Sunday night, he added

A portion of Quezon Avenue’s northbound direction was flooded in knee-deep waters, which Bamba said was about 15 to 18 inches high.

The section of Kamias Street going to Edsa was also inundated with rainwater 10 to 12 inches high, making the road impassable to light vehicles, Bamba continued.

Gutter-deep waters also flooded the portion of Edsa near Santolan, Bamba said.

Motorists traversing Edsa toward the north were tangled in heavy traffic that stretched from Nepa Q Mart near Kamias to Santolan where floodwaters slowly went down the drain, according to MMDA Metrobase’s Tess Ignacio.

Elsewhere, traffic flow began to normalize around 8 p.m., she said.
