MANILA, Philippines—Information claiming that New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have launched an attack in typhoon-ravaged Leyte was dismissed Wednesday by the Philippine National Police as a hoax.

“All the text messages/FB [Facebook] posts about NPA attacking residents in Carigara, San Juanico, [and] armed men on way to Ormoc and Tacloban are not true/ hoax,” PNP’s Police Community Relations Group (@PNP_PCRG) said in a twitter post Wednesday afternoon.

The statement was made following reports circulating in the Internet about the rebel attacks.

“We need help in disseminating the right information,” it said.

The police and military have secured and cleared the road from Ormoc to Tacloban, it said, adding that transportation of relief items to affected areas will be secured.
