DepEd changes CVIRAA skeds for second time

/ 09:05 AM November 11, 2013

The Department of Education (DepEd) is once again moving another multi-sporting meet, this time because of the devastation brought by supertyphoon “Yolanda.”

DepEd, for the second time, decided to move the annual Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) sportsfest from December to February 2014.

The games featuring the best young athletes of the Central Visayas region was originally scheduled on Dec. 1 to 6 but was moved to Dec. 14-18 because of the tight schedule of the athletes caused by the postponement of other multi-sporting meets due to the Oct. 15 earthquake in Cebu and Bohol.

The games were again moved to next year following the superstorm.

Cebu City will host the regional meet but because of the damage suffered by the municipalities and cities in northern Cebu, the DepEd Region VII office headed by Physical Education and School Sports Chief Vivian Ginete decided to reschedule the regional meet. No specific date has been given.

According to DepEd Cebu City Division sports coordinator Zenaida Gocotano, Cebu Province needs more time to recover from the super typhoon.

“Northern Cebu is now suffering because of the typhoon, and that will surely result in their absence at the CVIRAA,” Gocotano said. “Region VII also depends on the strong performances of Cebu Provinces’ athletes from Bogo City up to the northern tip, which were really badly hit by the typhoon. We just hope that by February next year, the teams and athletes from the mentioned places have already recovered from the calamity.”

Gocotano said that the DepEd Region VII will be conducting a series of meetings to modify the schedule for the division meet.
