THE DEFENDING champions Ateneo Blue Eagles will be looking to take one more step closer towards an outright slot in the finals when they face off against the National University Bulldogs today in the 74th UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles are just two wins away from a sweep of their games in the elimination round, with the prize of that feat being an automatic berth in the finals.
Their 12th win came at the expense of the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons yesterday, 73-58.
However, standing in their with the intentions of playing spoilsports are the Bulldogs, who are also on a quest to make it to the next round.
But with their chances growing dim because of their 4-7 (win-loss) record, the Bulldogs must slay the giants today in order to give themselves a chance of catching up with the fourth-place University of Sto. Tomas, who are sporting a 6-5 record.
Those same Growling Tigers will also be aiming for some distance between them and their pursuers, when they take on the second-running Adamson Soaring Falcons in the main game today.
The Falcons, though, will be no easy customers as they are also looking to lock up the second twice-to-beat advantage bonus with their magic number being two. Correspondent Jonas Panerio
