NAGA CITY, Philippines—Two of nine prisoners who escaped last week from the provincial jail in Pili, Camarines Sur, surrendered to authorities in San Miguel, Bulacan, and were turned over to jail authorities here on Tuesday.

Jail Warden Jose Franciso Musa identified the two as Muriel San Joaquin, who is facing car theft charges, and Erwin Capuz, who is charged with violation of the antidrug law.

The two are now back at the provincial jail of Camarines Sur in Barangay Tinangis, Pili town, a neighboring town of this city.

Musa said seven other escapees remained at large: Richard Tell, charged with statutory rape; Juan Polidario, illegal possession of firearms; Kalim Padillo, frustrated murder; Roy Cabaltera, rape; Eugene Porutas, drug trafficking; Roland Negrido, murder and Llyod Gilford Embile, robbery.

He said on Oct. 31 he received a call from relatives of Capuz who told him about Capuz’s plan to surrender.

Musa learned Capuz was with San Joaquin when they boarded a bus bound for Manila from Daet, Camarines Norte, after escaping from the provincial jail.

Camarines Norte jail authorities coordinated with police in the province and in Bulacan to facilitate the surrender of Capuz and San Joaquin.

Musa learned from Capuz and San Joaquin that they decided to take refuge in the house of relatives in Bulacan because they ran out of cash and were starving.

The two surrendered to the municipal police of San Miguel, Bulacan on Nov. 1, added Musa.

Musa identified Porutas as the leader of the jailbreak, which was planned and coordinated with people from outside prison.
