Montoya, Sevillano top Strike Open tilt

EDSEL Montoya and University of San Carlos’ (USC) Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano emerged as the best woodpushers in the open and kiddies division, respectively, in the Strike Open Chess Tournament of the Four Central Squares Chess Association at the Robinsons Cybergate Mall last Sunday.

Sevillano finished the seven-round Swiss system tournament in the kiddies division with 6.5 points to bag the P3,000 purse.

Laila Camel Nadera settled for second place with 6.0 points.

Ninth-seed Edsel Vosotros, third-seed Vic Glysen Derotas and 10th-seed James Andrew Balbona also finished with 6.0 points were ranked according to the tie-break points. They finished third to fifth place, respectively.

Meanwhile, Montoya finished with a perfect 7.0 points and went home with the P4,000 purse for topping the open division.

Montoya defeated third placer Romel Ganzon in the final round to complete his impressive sweep.

Venancio Loyola and National Master(NM) Merben Roque both shared second place after finishing with identical scores of 6.0 points. /Correspondent Dale G. Rosal
