Relocation of PH capital pushed

Representatives Gary Alejano and Francisco Ashley Acedillo of Magdalo have proposed the creation of a National Capital Commission to study the feasibility of relocating the country’s capital as well as the permanent seat of the national government.

While the national government has held office in Manila and the National Capital Region since 1976, the setting is far from ideal, according to the lawmakers.

“Unfortunately, decades henceforth, lack of urban planning as manifested by antiquated drainage systems, degraded air quality, faulty traffic management and the proliferation of illegal settlers make Metro Manila a place with only little space for development,” they said.

The commission would be given two years to finish its task and submit its recommendation to the President. If it does not recommend a transfer of the capital, it must recommend how to improve the existing situation in Manila and the NCR.
