Penultimate leg of Smart taekwondo slated today

THE PENULTIMATE leg of the 2013 Smart-Philippine Taekwondo League (PTL) unfolds today at the SM City in Consolacion town, northern Cebu.

Leading the cast of teams who will be seeing action today is the University of Cebu (UC), who will be eyeing its second win in as many games in the boys’ division of the tournament, which is supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

The UC fighting Webmasters will try to solidify their hold on the second spot and brighten their chances of taking the lead in the cadet boys division. The UC cadet boys squad is presently perched at the second spot of the cadet boys division in the tournament with a 2-0 (win-loss) card.

A win by UC and a loss by the University of San Carlos (USC), who is also seeing action today versus a separate foe, would put UC atop the division entering the final round set on Nov. 17.

FEATURED STORIES

Set to meet the bets of UC in the 12-to-14-year-old cadet division is the Cebu Cherish team, which is currently at third place with a 2-1 record.

USC, for its part, will target its third straight victory in as many games when it faces the Cabancalan National High School in the cadet boys division.

In the junior girls division, which is open to fighters 17-and-below, the Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras will gun for their third straight victory when they battle the UC squad.

The Raul Luna-mentored SWU jins will be coming into the match with momentum on their side as they are coming off from a victory versus bottom-dweller Cabancalan NHS the last time out.

Expected to once again spearhead SWU’s campaign are Ashley Venus Bongon, Roan Begontes, Lyza Mae Sabellano, Lorelee Natividad, Florlyn Cabo and Nicole Elpa.

In the Cadet girls division, currently leading the pack is the Divino team with a 2-0 (win-loss) record followed by UC at second with 1-1, Cabancalan NHS with 1-2 and St. Theresa’s College with 0-1. /correspondent Jade S. Violeta
