Peacemaking fatal for man who just craved ‘papaitan’

/ 12:55 AM November 02, 2013

He just went to the slaughterhouse to ask for meat scraps that he could cook to make papaitan—but ended up being “butchered” himself.

A man who tried to play peacemaker in a father-and-son fight in front of an abattoir was knifed dead by the son early Friday in Novaliches, Quezon City.

Federico Calpito Jr., 45, was attacked with a butcher knife and died while undergoing treatment at Novaliches General Hospital.

The suspect, Gio Shay Arquisola, an 18-year-old salesman at SM Novaliches, was arrested by the police, who had him detained on murder charges.

FEATURED STORIES

Police records showed that around 3 a.m. on Friday, a drunk Arquisola was having a heated argument with his father in front of the public slaughterhouse on Mayon Street inside Amparo Subdivision, Barangay (village) Nagkaisang Nayon, when their neighbor Calpito saw them and tried to intervene.

According to witnesses, Calpito went there just to ask for ingredients for a papaitan dish. It was not immediately clear how the suspect got hold of the butcher knife he used to attack the victim.

After the incident, Arquisola ran off with the knife and was later arrested at an aunt’s house. Julie M. Aurelio
