MANILA, Philippines—In an attempt to sabotage the economy, as the military would describe it, about 50 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) tried hacking to death more than 500 pigs in Bukidnon on Wednesday.

The NPA first attempted to burn a barn owned by Mega Farms in Sil-pon village at Libona town at about 6:30a.m., Captain Christian Uy of Army’s 4th Infantry Division said.

The rebels were on their way to flee when they passed by a piggery of the same farm. They tried killing 564 pigs, Uy said, adding that the NPA’s agenda was “economic sabotage.”

Fifty of the pigs were declared “dead on the spot” while the rest were still being treated.

Pursuit operations by police and military forces are ongoing.

It wasn’t known if the deplorable act was made in support of the nationwide clamor against the pork barrel scam.
