MANILA, Philippines — Commission on Elections chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Tuesday said barangay elections continued in a number of villages in the country amid initial delays the day before.
Elections in at least 94 villages were halted on Monday because ballots did not reach the precincts on time or teachers didn’t show up because of security reasons like in Lanao del Sur.
“Elections in a number of villages did not function…In Lanao del Sur, many did not push through but we are continuing it today. These are not special elections,” Brillantes told Radyo Inquirer 990AM.
Brillantes said they found substitute Board of Election Tellers to replace those who backed out. These include police trainees and teachers from other precincts.
He also said elections have likewise resumed in far-flung areas, including Calayan Island in Cagayan, which were not able to receive election materials on time.
“We have a contingency plan involving improvised ballots. We made new ballots since (Calayan Island) has only one precinct,” Brillantes said.
He added that other areas have received their election paraphernalia and were expected to conclude elections on Tuesday.
