2 retired justices join probe team into corruption in judiciary

MANILA, Philippines—An associate justice who once turned down a P10-million bribe and a criminal law expert has joined Associate Justice Marvic Leonen in the committee that will investigate the alleged influence peddling in the judiciary.
Retired Associate Justices Alicia Austria-Martinez and Romeo Callejo will be part of the committee that will investigate the reported corruption in the judiciary.
Austria-Martinez, current Dean of Adamson University College of Law, retired from the high court on April 30, 2009 or 15 months before her compulsory retirement, citing health reasons.
During the time of Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, Austria-Martinez was said to have rejected a P10-million offer from a businessman and reported the incident to the high court en banc.
Callejo, meanwhile, is considered an expert in the field of criminal and legal procedure. He retired from the high court on April 28, 2007.
