MANILA, Philippines—Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle has a word of advice for Church organizations: Drop the attitude of competition and work together.
In his homily at a Mass concluding the three-day Philippine Conference on New Evangelization at the University of Santo Tomas on Friday, Tagle observed that a “competition of egos” had become rampant among Church organizations in the country.
“Let us do away with one big problem of missionaries being sent…the individualism. This is not part of the mission,” CBCP News, the official news service of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, quoted Tagle as saying.
He said the attitude of competition among Church organizations was creating conflict and causing divisiveness, which are contrary to the faith.
“So to the Church organizations and movements, let us avoid the competition of egos. It is hard. It destroys the mission,” said Tagle.
Instead of trying to outdo each other, the archbishop urged Church missionaries and organizations to submit to and lift one another and work together for Christ.
He reiterated the need for the Catholic Church to be united, emphasizing that its mission would be stronger and more effective if its “laborers will stay and love one another.”
“We are sent together. We are sent as a Church. We are sent as companions and I appeal to you, let us keep this common journey together,” said Tagle.
“If you have companions on the way, the work may be heavy but you know you have someone there who shares with you the same vision, also the same mission,” he added.
