Japanese surfer kills self in Catanduanes

VIRAC, Catanduanes, Philippines—A Japanese surfer jumped to his death in a beach resort in Puraran, Baras, Catanduanes, Thursday morning, police said Friday.

Shanichi Imamura, 38, of Kagoshima, Japan, died at the provincial hospital here while being treated for multiple injuries suffered when he jumped from the third floor of Puraran Beach Resort building in Baras, about 30 kilometers from this capital town, said provincial police director Senior Supt. Lito Pitallano.

Resort owner Cecilia Soria said Imamura talked with her at the canteen before going up to the third floor from where he jumped at about 9:30 a.m., Pitallano said.

He said Soria also told the police that Imamura, an avid surfer, has been in and out of the country for several years and been renting the only room at the third floor of the resort, also for several years now.

Pitallano said Soria also told the police that Imamura left a letter addressed to his mother stating: “Don’t look (for) me, I’m dead.” Fernan Gianan, Inquirer Southern Luzon
