MANILA, Philippines—Vice President Jejomar Binay called for prayers for the victims of the earthquake in Bohol Tuesday morning that hit neighboring cities and provinces.

“I ask everyone to pray for those who were hit by the earthquake and the recent typhoons. Let us pray for their safety and for strength to overcome this difficult time,” Binay said in a statement.

“Let us also pray for our country, that we be spared from further calamities,” he added.

He said that the Office of the Vice President will provide relief assistance and urged others including the public to give assistance to the survivors.

At least 20 have so far been reported killed and more injured, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) situation report Tuesday noon.

“The survivors will need food, water, medicines, clothes, blankets and basic toiletries. I ask everyone to donate whatever you have to help ease the sufferings of our kababayans,” Binay said.

“In times like these, we need to look beyond ourselves and see how we can alleviate the pains of others,” he said.
