MANILA, Philippines—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is standing pat on its decision not to increase the honoraria for public school teachers who will man the Board of Election Tellers in the barangay (village) elections, amid threats of a boycott by the tutors.

“We won’t increase the honoraria. It’s a non-issue since we did not reduce it. It is still P2,500,” said Comelec Chair Sixto Brillantes Jr.

Based on Comelec Resolution No. 9571, teachers will be paid P3,000–P2,000 for handling barangay precincts,  P500 transportation allowance and P500 for handling Sangguniang Kabataan precincts. But the SK polls will not push through.

“For their service on election day, we will still pay them P2,500. So where is the cut there?” he said. Jocelyn R. Uy
