Jacobo Zobel de Zangroniz, who established the first horse-drawn tramway in the country, was born on Oct. 12, 1842. A pharmacist, he was also dubbed by historian Teodoro M. Kalaw as the “premier Filipino mason.” He built tramway lines within Manila and its surrounding areas, the first being the Manila-Tondo line, which was later stretched to Malabon. He died on Oct. 6, 1896.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
