The Southwestern University (SWU) Lady Cobras hope to complete a double celebration for their volleyball program as they shoot for the title via a sweep today in Game Two of the best-of-three finals series against the Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU) in the women’s division of the Cesafi volleyball tournament at the Aznar Coliseum.
The Lady Cobras defeated CDU in Game One, 25-16, 27-25, 25-12, to take a 1-0 lead in this series and come within a win away of reclaiming the throne they momentarily lost to the University of San Carlos (USC) last year.
And after seeing its younger counterparts bring home the bacon with a sweep of USC in the girl’s division with a 25-16, 25-19 win in Game Two on Thursday night, SWU is eager to also finish this series.
After the title girls’ win, head coach Jordan Paca was ecstatic that his player’s efforts finally paid off.
“Nindot kaayu ako feeling kay ang among kahago sa practice, nigawas tanan,” Paca said.
SWU athletic director Ryan Aznar also marvelled at the success of the girls’ team, which was formed a mere three years ago. “It’s our first title since we formed it three years back. Winning the Cesafi title is quite an achievement considering that we did not beat USC in the elimination and semifinal rounds. But I believed in our girls’ talents and it came out during the championship round,” Aznar said.
In the third place game for the girl’s division, the ousted champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) settled for third place after it beat the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu in three sets, 25-13, 24-26, 25-17.
The University of Southern Philippines Foundation and USJ-R also battle for third place in the women’s division today at 6 p.m.
