AROUND a hundred motorcycle drag racers will converge at the Cebu South Coastal Road this Sunday for the first ever “First Mayor JVR Motorcycle Drag Race and Motorshow Competition.”
The race aims to introduce a safe venue for drag racers who usually organize illegal drag races in Cebu’s highways.
Bryan Renejane of Blakeley’s Motorcare the event organizer, said that their primary goal is to give the racers a chance to showcase their wares in a safe venue.
“Gusto nato tagaan ug higayon ang mga drag racers para mabuhat nila ilang gusto sa sakto nga lugar ug aron pud mapun-an atong activities during the fiesta of Santa Theresa de Avila on the 15th of October,” said Talisay City Mayor Johnny V. Delos Reyes. “We are also planning nga himuon ni namo nga tinuig nga activity,” added Delos Reyes during yesterday’s official race launch at the Talisay City Hall. He was joined by Renejane and Talisay City Sports Commission executive Engr. Jeanette Villagonzalo.
The race will have six categories: 52-millimeter piston size, 57mm, 59mm (scooter), 62mm, Open mixed and the production (pure stock) category.
Noted drag racers from Zamboanga, Pampanga and Negros will vie in the event which offers P200,000 in prize money. Only 10 entries will be accepted per category. Talisay City’s TREAT medical response team will also be deployed.
Mayor Delos Reyes, who is also a motorcycle enthusiast, will be joining the race.
Registration fee is pegged at P1,000 per rider.
Meanwhile, a total of P60,000 is at stake for the best-designed, customized and modified motorcycle in the motorshow which has a registration fee of P800. Registration starts on race day. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
