SWU jins dominate Smart taekwondo tilt

SOUTHWESTERN University’s (SWU) jins showed their might yesterday at the resumption of hostilities in the Smart-Philippine Taekwondo League at the SM City-Consolacion in Consolacion, Cebu.

The SWU fighters stamped their dominance over the undermanned Cabangcalan National High School team, 63-40, in the junior girls’ division.

Spearheading the campaign of SWU were Lyza Mae Sabellano, Florlyn Cabo, Ashley Venus Bongon, Nicole Elpa, Lorelee Natividad and Roan Begontes as they overpowered the hapless Cabancalan team, which was manned by only three players.

Representing Cabancalan in its unsuccessful campaign in the competition, which is also being held in 9 different regions around the country including the National Capital Region, are Angelica Torremocha, Grace Igot and Cherielyn Cayan.

In the Cadet boys category, the Cebu Cherish School squad came out victorious after narrowly escaping the San Roque squad in the individual and tag team competitions.

Jehosaphat Wong, Dandy Sator, Hiel Seares and James Alfred Elpa accumulated a total of 67 points in the individual and tag team competitions to slay San Roque’s 62-point production.

Manning the squad of San Roque were Mark Mabayo, Roel Perales, John Glen Salan, Paul Onde, Darwin Galan and Niño Joseph Tagasa.

The first leg of this tourney was launched last June 2 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium and the rest of the legs are being held separately in 10 regions all over the country.

The Cebu edition of this tourney, which is being spearheaded by Olympian and Taekwondo Ambassador Monsour del Rosario and Barcelona Olympic Bronze Medalist Stephen Fernandez, opened last Aug.4 and will last until November. /correspondent Jade Violeta
