USJ-R survives shaky start vs CIT-U

The University of San Jose-Recoletos’ bid for a fourth straight title got off to a shaky start but it still ended in victory as they slipped past the Cebu Institute of Technology-University in five sets at the start of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) volleyball tournament, yesterday at the Aznar Coliseum.

The wards of head coach Grace Antigua showed their immaturity and resiliency at the same time as they got behind by two sets before recovering to take the last three, for their first win in the seniors division. CIT-U got off to a fast start as they won the two opening salvos, 20-25, 20-25. However, USJ-R, which was fired up by the fiery Antigua, found their bearings and won the next three sets, 25-18, 25-15, 15-12, for the win.

In other games in the men’s side, fellow powerhouse University of Southern Philippines Foundation swept the University of Cebu, 25-10, 25-17, 25-13. In the boys’ division, the reigning champions, USPF, downed the University of San Carlos, 25-17, 25-9 while USJ-R won via default.

Action continues today at the same venue with the girls and the ladies raring to strut their stuff. The defending champions Southwestern University will be in action against the Cebu Doctors’ University.
