7th Pink October Run set Oct. 20

The seventh ‘Pink October Run’ of the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) and the Philippine Society of General Surgeons (PSGS) Cebu Chapter will hit the road on Oct. 20, 2013 at the Terraces of Ayala Center Cebu.

Around 800 runners are expected to join the race which aims to raise awareness on breast cancer. A simultaneous run will also be held in Manila.

Local organizers headed by Dr. Peter Mancao said no plastic cups will be used in the water stations as part of the green run advocacy of participating runners bringing their own hydration bottles. Plastic cups are available only at the finish line.

The run will feature a 12-kilometer run, 6k and 3k distances that will start and finish at the Terraces of Ayala Center Cebu with the theme “Defeating Breast Cancer.”

Last year, the run drew 600 runners and Mancao is confident of attracting 200 more this year.

“The best prevention to breast cancer is early detection, that is our message every year, one can survive easily if they can detect it early, that’s why every October, Cebu Doctors Hospital (CDU) and some Cebu hospitals provide discounts for mammogram,” said Mancao during yesterday’s launching at the Casino Español along with race director Joel Baring of Sports and Fitness Enthusiasts (SAFE) and fellow organizer Dr. Sander Ugalino.

Winners will not receive cash but will get prizes in kind including a medal each.

Ayala Center Cebu and SM City Cebu according to Dr. Mancao, are also helping their advocacy of stopping breast cancer by putting up pink rooms where one can freely consult and have breast examination.

Registration fee is P300 for all three categories. One can register at the Pink October Run booth in the Active Zone of Ayala Center Cebu. Deadline is Oct. 19.
