Mandaue honors 2 century-old lolas

FELIZA Adolfo will turn 102 in December while Amanda Castañeda turned 100 last month.

They each received P50,000 cash and a plaque of recognition from the Mandaue city government at yesterday’s opening of the week-long celebration of Filipino Elderly Week at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Both centenarians are generally in good health and can still walk. Adolfo of barangay Cabangcalan uses a cane.

Castañeda of barangay Mantuyong, said they were happy to be recognized and hopes to live many more years.

Mandaue City has about 15,000 senior citizens, who each receive P2,000 a year as financial assistance and is released in June and December.

A pending proposal in the City Council seeks to increase the allowance by P500 in December.

The Mandaue City government had been giving cash gifts to centenarians for the past three years. Eight have been honored so far.

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale yesterday announced that the provincial government will be creating a Council for the Elderly to promote their rights and welfare, and provide them assistance.

A gateball tournament for senior citizens will be held today and tomorrow at the Bridge Park below the Marcelo Fernan Bridge.

A dental mission is set on October 4 and a health and wellness day on October 5 at the sports complex.

Seniors will be treated to services like a manicure, pedicure, facial massage, and hair cut. Basic dance exercises for senior citizens will also be offered as well as a nutrition booth and Federation of People with Disabilities Booth.
