The late musician, composer and teacher Lucrecia Kasilag began composing during World War II and wrote more than 250 original compositions. Born on Aug. 31, 1917, Kasilag was dubbed the “First Lady of Philippine Music.” A former president of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, she was also dean of Philippine Women’s University (PWU) College of Music and Fine Arts and was known for her pioneering research into ethnic culture. Proclaimed National Artist for Music in 1989, Kasilag died on Aug. 16, 2008.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
