Cebu City retained its overall crown in the Batang Pinoy-Visayas Qualifying Leg after its boxers added six gold medals in yesterday’s boxing finals in Maasin City, Southern Leyte.
Aside from the gold from its boxers, Cebu City’s dancesport team also hauled gold medals courtesy of its bets in the juvenile category.
The dancesport team won five of the six events in the sport to chip in five gold medals, five silvers and four bronze medals. Abellana National School (ANS) topped the volleyball boys division for another gold medal for Cebu City while University of Cebu’s (UC) scrabble team also won a gold.
Cebu City now has a total of 88 gold medals, 57 silvers and 28 bronze medals in this competition for athletes aged 15 and below.
In boxing, Jeffrey Jimenez won via a unanimous decision over Jay Forzado of Maasin City to capture the gold medal in the kiddie weight division while Marvin Pumar also won via a unanimous decision against Joshua Orello of Maasin City in the mosquito division.
Richard Rama topped the flyweight division over Ronel Corales of Consolacion, Cebu while John Lloyd Trasporte defeated Carl Cortes of Mandaue City in the 52-kilogram division. Kit Ceron Garces dominated the light pinweight division by nipping Dan Rick Sumabong of Bohol, while Mark Anthony Rotilles contributed a gold medal for Cebu City.
Meanwhile, ANS’ softball team wasn’t so lucky as it bowed to Iloilo during the championship game yesterday. Results of other sporting events have yet to be released as of press time.
