The cartoon character Juan de la Cruz, the symbol of the ordinary Filipino, was given a face by illustrator and cartoonist Jorge Pineda who was born on July 26, 1879, in Sta. Cruz, Manila. The name was coined by Scottish-born journalist Robert McCulloch-Dick in the 1900s after he noticed that it was the most common name that appeared in police blotters and court dockets in the Philippines.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
