The Philippine Daily Inquirer won two of the top awards in the 2011 La Sallian Scholarum Awards.
The Inquirer Learning section story “Education Matters: Top 10 in 2010” was named Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a Nationally Circulated Publication.
A collaborative work of section editor Chelo Banal-Formoso, contributing editor Linda B. Bolido and Inquirer Research, it listed the 10 most significant stories and developments that had an impact on Philippine education in 2010.
Raffy Lerma’s photograph in the Inquirer, “A Girl Looks at the Charred Remains of Her House,” received the Outstanding Published Photograph on Youth and Education for a Newspaper award.
Other winners were Rachel Castro Barawid, Outstanding Published Article on De la Salle University for “DLSU Students Devise Flood Prediction System”; Bum Tenorio Jr. of the Philippine Star, Outstanding Column Article on Youth and Education for “How Far Can Your P50 Go?”; Sandra Aguinaldo of I-Witness, GMA 7, Outstanding Televised Feature Story on Youth and Education for “Pasan-pasan”; and Lora Marie Lumba of The Scholastican, St. Scholastica’s College, Outstanding Published Feature Article on Youth and Education in a School Organ for “Unfurling the Cape.”
This year’s contest theme was “Make a Bold Statement.”
The Scholarum Awards is an annual project of the De la Salle University. Sponsored by the Marketing Communication Office, it gives recognition to outstanding print, photo, broadcast, and campus journalists for their reportage on various youth and education issues.—Linda B. Bolido
